In my last post, I wrote about how I long for my kids to remain innocent forever. At this stage, their lives are so simple and their needs are so basic. All they really want is to be with Jim and I and have our attention and affection. This is when they are the most happy. They hang on our every word and they listen to us as though we are the authority on every aspect of life. They never, ever doubt what we say.
I've begun to wonder why this has to change. What makes children grow up and never listen to their parents, question everything they say and disobey them at every opportunity? What changes? As adults, it only gets worse....we debate and question everything, we listen to no one and we know better than anyone else. When it comes to our faith we are the same way....we question and over-analyze the Bible, we twist and turn it to meet our needs and we read only the parts that we want to hear (which is usually the "good news" and not the "bad"). I know this is not the way God intended it to be. As our Father, His desire is for us to have a child-like faith. So, why don't we listen to Him, obey Him, hang on His every word and never, ever doubt what He has to say? Why is He not the authority on every aspect of our lives? If we just had that innocence and child-like faith throughout our lives, I'm convinced things would be so different. I'm sure this is when I would be the most happy.

It is so hard when your little "angel" suddenly knows everything and not only questions but defies things just because the parent said it. I was reading James 1:15 last week and commentary from Charles Spurgeon about that verse. He said "Human nature rises against restraint.... So evil are we that we conceive at once the desire to commit an act, simply because it is forbidden." This is the situation in a sinful world.
This is why we must never give up on our children, even when one who brought you so much joy and love at birth becomes the one who causes you the most pain. God loves us regardless of our condition and we need to follow that perfect example.
When we overanalyze the bible we are doing what a wayward child does. The bible news that some would consider "bad" is there to make us understand why we need a Savior. It is there to make us look in the mirror. Certainly that mirror can only do its job and refelct turth if there is light. So many are in the dark and unable to see.
