The Things Kids Say

Last night my friends and I were having dinner and, of course, talking about our kids. Somehow we got on the topic of birthdays and how our children almost get 1 invitation per week. Its crazy! It starts so young, too. Connor just started preschool and he has gotten so many invitations that we would spend all of our weekends attending birthday parties if we went to every one of them. So, I let Connor choose which parties he would like to attend (if we don't have plans already). The week before Thanksgiving, Connor got an invitation from a little girl in his class and, as usual, I asked him if he would like to go. He said "sure". I assumed he would because he talks about this little girl quite often. So, we planned to go. When the time came to buy the gift I asked Connor if there was anything he thought we should get her and he was quite specific about getting her a NASCAR. I thought that was odd. She's a girl. He has a sister so he knows what kinds of things girls like to play with. Several different times throughout the day I asked him to make sure he understood the gift was for someone else....not him. Again, the reply was "a NASCAR". He was quite adamant about it and had such a serious look on his face. He almost looked annoyed at one point. He started to visibly "think" (you know, that look of contemplation) and he wasn't quite sure how to put it. At one point he said "she's my BOY friend". Then, after more thought, he said "Mom......she's a boy-ly girl". And he just stared at me with a straight face. I, on the other hand, was having a hard time keeping myself from bursting into laughter. Kids are hilarious. The things they say, out of sheer innocence, are priceless. Don't you wish the innocence could last forever?
