This week the kids started VBS at Desert View Bible. Connor is love, love, loving it. He was up at the crack of dawn this morning and asked if it was time for VBS yet. So sweet. Today we took a trip down to Phoenix Children's Hospital today to see one of our friends. He is 14 and had to have a screw placed in his hip after his femur pulled away from his hip bone! Ouuuuchhhhh! So, the trip to Children's Hospital was a very sobering reminder of just how blessed we are in so many ways.
Our friend was in a room with a 2 year old who was abused. He has been in the hospital for so long that he has had to re-learn how to walk and eat! There were 3 year old's pushing their own oxygen tanks down the hallways. Having to explain what was wrong with these kids to Payton and Connor was really difficult. The looks on their faces just screamed "why?" (I wonder the same thing). It was especially difficult to explain why the 2 year old boy was in the hospital for abuse. And, then to be asked by my 6 and 11 year old, "what is abuse"?
On a more positive note, this past weekend our family volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul's Hearts and Hands Day. About 4 times a year families/children are permitted to come to the facility to participate in work to help the poor. We did some decorating for the dining area and then we made labels for bottled water that would be given to people who live on the streets. It's kind of hard to find opportunities where children are allowed to serve others. The minimum age is usually 16. So, it was great to be able to do this together as a family and let the kids feel like they were making a difference, even if it was in a small way.
Anyhow, I don't know if I mentioned it here but we got Jim a Father's Day gift a bit early.....he went to the Sun's Playoff Game 6. He was one happy Daddy.
